Andy Hong, PhD
Andy Hong, PhD
Andy Hong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. He also leads the Healthy Aging and Resilient Places Lab where its mission is to create healthier and more resilient places for everyone across the lifespan. Andy’s research focuses on the connection between the built environment and human health, with a particular emphasis on developing tools and methods to understand challenges related to social and environmental determinants of health. His goal is to work with local communities and stakeholders to co-design equitable and sustainable urban planning and design solutions to promote age-friendly communities. Andy previously held positions at the University of Oxford, the George Institute for Global Health, the University of British Columbia, and the Korea Transport Institute. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California and his graduate and undergraduate studies at the University of Washington. Andy can be contacted at andy.hong@utah.edu

Anna Maki, Graduate Research Assistant
Anna Maki is a graduate student at the University of Utah's Master of City & Metropolitan Planning program, graduating in the spring of 2023. She has spent her academic career working on and specializing in transportation planning projects, with an emphasis in equity and accessibility. Recent projects include the creation of a campus walkability audit, an active transportation toolkit for the GNAR Initiative, and a bike equity program through the University of Utah's Sustainability Office. Her research focus is on active transportation and its implications for the health, safety, and equity of society.

Tom Millar, Associate Instructor
Tom Millar has been an Associate Instructor in the College of Architecture and Planning’s City and Metropolitan Planning department since 2017. He is also the Planning Manager at Salt Lake City’s Public Lands Department. His professional and educational work centers on creating active, social, complete, and beautiful transportation systems and cities for all people. Tom has been heavily involved in many notable local and national projects, including Salt Lake City’s Street & Intersection Typologies Design Guide, Pedestrian & Bicycle Master Plan; 300 South & 200 West Protected Intersection and Separated Bike Lanes; and 9-Line Trail and 900 South redesign. Tom will leverage his role as an associate instructor to help integrate the U-Walk package into the modules of the existing planning and design courses, including his courses, offered every Fall semester: CMP 4700 and 6700, “Planning & Designing for Walking & Bicycling”.
